![]() ![]() A few dracaenas are great matches as well. I have great luck with pothos and it comes in various patterns, I like the marble queens a lot. You also may need to get lights to go over the tank, we use uvb lights but you can do led lights if you want to do plants. I love adding plants but keep in mind ball pythons are thick bodied snakes so plants need to be study and deal with the higher humidity they need. The other part of bioactive is plants and fungi. ![]() I have a few species of isopods I keep and add to my bioactive set ups. The type of isopods you choose is partially what various isopods can take humidity wise and what you would like. Springtails and isopods are pretty standard but I have myself been pondering putting some millipedes in my snake cages since I don’t have to worry about them eating the millipedes. Still good to spot clean but they help and are fun to watch. Some people swap eco earth with organic top soil others just buy a ready to go mix from biodude or Joshs frogs.Īfter the layers and soil is sorted you add the microorganisms that help break down shed skin and poop. I tend to stay away from peat since it is not a renewable resource and they have to destroy bogs to harvest it. I personally have had good luck with 50% eco earth or coco chips 40% cypress mulch (I use a cypress mulch from my local nursery that has no dyes in it and is just cypress) the rest of the 10% is a mix of moss, sand and activated charcoal. For my soil people use a variety of things. Then your soil layer, I usually make it about 4-5 inches since I add plants to mine and I like having room for the roots. Then a barrier to keep soil from getting into the drainage layer, I tend to use not aluminum window screen since it is cheap and very effective. The goal is to basically take what is in nature and shrink it, so you have your drainage layer that excess water pools in and leeches back up as the substrate dries out. I have done several of my reptiles as bioactive and continue to make more bioactive as I finish their full sized homes. Also if you have any reptile shows nearby that you can visit a vendor selling isopods should also be a big help. Biodude has some videos as does snake discovery, Clint’s reptiles and Joshs frogs. ![]()
